Established in 1963, the Bass Museum of Art in Miami Beach exhibits works from both the past and present. Exhibitions focus on everything for renaissance and baroque to more contemporary pieces.

The museum's centerpiece is The Coronation of the Virgin with Saints which dates to 1492 and is the only known collaborated work between Botticelli and Ghirlandaio. There are also outdoor sculptures which surround the perimeter of the museum.

bass museum   CIFO Art Space

Among industrial warehouses and dilapidated buildings one can find the CIFO Art Space, located in Downtown Miami's Park West District. The museum holds the collection of philanthropist Ella Fontanals Cisneros and her family. The museum and its accompanying foundation support the work of emerging and mid-career contemporary Latin American artists.

The building, which is completely covered in mosaic tiles, is equally as impressive as the art it holds If you are a group of 5 or more, you can call ahead for an informal viewing at 305-455-3385.

bass museum   Margulies Collection at the Warehouse

In 1999, art collector Martin Margulies opened his collection to the public with the help of his longtime curator Katherine Hinds. Set in a 45,000-square-foot warehouse in Wynwood, the Margulies Collection at the Warehouse is an amazing collection of contemporary artwork.

The collection is primarily compromised of photography, sculpture, video and installation works. Movements covered include Bauhaus, School of Düsseldorf, Social Realism and Farm Security Administration. Artists in the collection include Frank Stella, Rob Fischer, Jason Rhoades and Thomas Hirschhorn

Located at the Miami Cultural Plaza in Downtown Miami, the Miami Museum of Art has been the county's flagship museum since 1996. The 15,000-square-foot museum is dedicated to acquiring and exhibiting contemporary works of art. Also located in the Plaza are the Historical Museum of Southern Florida and the Miami-Dade County Main Library.

By 2009, the museum hopes to move to a new 125,000-square-foot facility at the newly planned Museum Park to be built in what is now called Bicentennial Park.

One of the most impressive art collections in the world is housed in a former Drug Enforcement Agency building whose walls went from holding drugs and weapons to keeping priceless works of art. The Rubell Family Collection is only open to the public six months of year, but if you are lucky enough to be in town during December through May, you will see one of the most astonishing private collections in the United States.

Don Rubell, brother of the late Steve Rubell, owner of Studio 54, and his family have amassed a contemporary art collection that includes works by Andy Warhol, Cindy Sherman, Jeff Koons and Jean-Michel Basquait.

The 45,000-square-foot museum is located in Wynwood, nearby many other museums and art galleries such as the Margulies Collection at the Warehouse and the Dorsch Gallery.

bass museum   Wolfsonian-FIU

Housed in a 1927 Mediterranean revival building, the Wolfsonian-FIU is regarded as one of the best museums in the United States and concentrates on exhibiting works of print and design. Especially impressive is its collection of political propaganda.

The museum's exhibitions, donated to Florida International University in 1997, spans 4 floors in a 7-story warehouse. With over 56,000 square feet of space, it is one of the area's largest museums. It is located in Miami Beach's Art Deco District.

Here is a money saving tip: Visit the museum on Friday after 6 p.m. when admission is free courtesy of the Miami Herald, the city's local newspaper..

Most Miami art galleries are located in the Wynwood Art District, but some can also be found in Coral Gables, Miami Beach and the North Miami Art District.

Don't let Wynwood's industrial warehouse facade fool you; the galleries here pack a punch. Some of the best up and coming contemporary artists both local, national and foreign choose to display their work here.

During Art Basel Miami Beach, may of the unused warehouse are converted into guerilla galleries hoping to attract lucrative art collectors.

You don't have to purchase anything to visit the galleries, but be aware some are by appointment only.

The second Saturday of every month, the galleries in Wynwood and the nearby Miami Design District open their doors to the public from 7 to 10 p.m. Admission is free and complimentary drinks and snacks are usually served.

Originally from Buenos Aires, Argentina, the Diana Lowenstein Fine Arts gallery relocated to Miami in 2000 to take advantage of Miami up and coming art scene. The gallery is now located in the heart of Miami's Wynwood Art District.

As curator, Diana Lowenstein has an appreciation for Latin American contemporary artists, which make up the bulk of artists she chooses to display.

Since 1991, the Dorsch Gallery has been holding exhibitions and breathing life into Miami’s art scene. The gallery moved to a 7,000 square-foot warehouse in Wynwood in 2000, making it one of the first galleries to call the area home.

Its main emphasis is on emerging South Florida artists who work in sculpture, painting, sound art, new media and performance. Over 20 artists currently display their works here. The gallery at times serves as a venue for cultural events.

Edge Zones purpose is to be more than just an exhibition space. It seeks out unknown emerging local artists and gives them a platform on which they can speak to an audience. Its World Arts Building in Wynwood provides artists with three floors of exhibition space.

The gallery's mission is to get the local community involved in the art scene as well through cultural events, performances, discussions and education.

The sister site to a Parisian gallery, Galerie Emmanuel Perrotin is worlds away from the streets of Paris, instead finding itself amongst converted warehouses and mom-and-pop shops in Wynwood. The gallery has quickly risen to the top thanks to the high caliber of artists it represents.

Sophie Calle, Peter Zimmermann, Naomi Fisher, Xavier Veilhan and Daniel Arsham have all graced the gallery's walls. With over two floors of exhibition space, Emmanuel Parrotin is one of the area's largest galleries.
