Miami Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival is held to promote the Asian tradition of dragon boat racing. Now in its fifth year, the festival is a great time for the Chinese to share their culture with the Miami community. The boat racing, made possible by the Miami Overseas Chinese Association, encourages outdoor sports, and all the proceeds from the event are used for either the promotion of dragon boat racing in Miami or charity.
This traditional dragon boat race from China is held in various cities of the country. Racing begins at 8 a.m. and ends at 5 p.m in Brickell. Races are held in various categories. Participant teams paddle the Chinese style boats with colorful dragon heads to the finish line. The first place carries a prize of $1,500. More than dozens of teams take part in this sporting event that draws a nice crowd of 25,000+.
