What started out as Miami's Little San Juan, the Wynwood Art District has turned into one of the most lauded communities. The former Puerto Rican enclave has given way to world-class museums and art galleries. Next to abandoned warehouses, mom-and-pop shops and the city's rail yards, you can find some of the best examples of contemporary art in the United States.

The Margulies Collection at the Warehouse, CiFo Art Space, Rubell Family Collection and MOCA at Goldman Warehouse form the core of the museums found the area. Smaller galleries such as the Dorsch Gallery, Diana Lowenstein Fine Arts, Galerie Emmanuel Perrotin and Edge Zones also call Wynwood home.

Locals come out the second Saturday of every month to explore the museums and galleries that stay open late and some play host to special events and live entertainment.

In December, during Art Basel Miami Beach thousands of visitors flock to the area to visit the satellite fairs such as Scope Miami, NADA Art Fair and photo Miami. Guerilla galleries take over spaces for rent hoping to attract wealthy art collectors.

When you're done with the artistic merit of the area, stop by Stop Miami, 3533 NE 2nd Ave., (305-576-0900), an inexpensive wine and tapas bar that is a favorite with the locals. Charcuterie, 3612 NE 2nd Ave., (305-576-7877), is a wonderful French-inspired menu that offers a romantic setting.

The Raddison Hotel Miami is located in nearby Midtown overlooks Biscayne Bay. It is close to many top Miami attractions and features a relaxing rooftop pool. The Doubletree Grand Hotel on Biscayne Bay is directly east of Wynwood and features great amenities at a reasonable price.
